  • Adelaide Festival of Ideas 2009 - Pushing The Limits
    People talk glibly as if pushing the limits is always a good thing. Often it is good of course, because by pushing the limits we reach new ideas, experiences, products and plans. Sometimes, however, the limits push back. For example, the Murray Darling Basin and world financial markets have been pushed too far and the consequences are serious. And in public policy, the limits of tolerance are always a matter of passionate debate.

  • Australian Farmer Sculpture - Marijan Bekic
    During 1992, the District Council of LeHunte (South Australia) called a community meeting at the Wudinna Community Club to discuss the possibility of a district project. Discussion focussed on a project to recognise the efforts of all early settlers and pioneers of the district....A workgroup contacted Sculptor, Marijan Bekic, who spent time in the district gaining a feel for the region, the people, the strength and determination required for survival of tough times, drought, isolation along with the good seasons, community spirit, the celebration of life and the belief in the future of this region....Marijan Bekic, Sculptor, born 1953 in small country town Modran near Derventa, region known as "Bosanska Posavina", in Bosna and Hercegovina. 1959 - the family moved to Pozega, Croatia. 1969 - with his father emigrated to Austria, and one year later to Switzerland and started as a labourer in civil construction company, then made career as a plant and machine operator... Commissions accepted. If you have any kind of natural stone around your property and would like to turn it into an artistic feature, simply get in touch with Marijan.

  • SA Police Historical Society
    South Australia was colonised in 1836. Unlike the other States, it was not a penal settlement and migrants were ‘free settlers’. It was hoped that by adopting this type of migrant, a respectable society would grow in South Australia and there would be no need for an organised Police Force. Shortly after colonisation some protection was afforded the colonists by the employment of a few retired artillery-men, special volunteer constables and a small group of marines from the H.M.S. ‘Buffalo’, which vessel had brought the Governor to the new land. The marines were found to be unsatisfactory as they were not always sober !...
