Croatian Cultural Week - Western Australia

Organised on behalf of Croatian Community of WA by Croatian World Congress.

It is held in conjunction with City of Fremantle Festival in November of each year.

Aim - to present Croatian culture to a wider, Australian, audience. To bring together cultural heritage of Croatia and the Croatian Communities within Australia. To foster and promote local talent, especially among the younger generations.

History - Croatian Cultural Week started in 1998 as a part of a wider project in collaboration with the General Consulate of the Republic of Croatia in Perth.
The following year it was held in conjunction with the Korcula Cultural exhibition which was organised separately to celebrate Fremantle/Korcula signing of Charter of Friendship.
Last year, as in previous years, it was also as an extension of the Fiesta Kultura, a yearly festival of ethnic groups organised by Kulcha, an organisation of Multicultural Arts in WA.
This clearly indicates the inclusiveness of the Croatian Cultural week.

Within the Croatian Cultural Week a whole spectrum of art form has been represented such as

    * Film - presenting the latest Croatian full-length feature films as well as films from the famed animation studios in Zagreb. The selection and presentation was organised by Professor Kruno Martinac.

    * Drama – with plays staged by Fremantle based drama group “Ivan Gundulic” presenting works of contemporary Croatian playwrights; also works by our own local playwright George Blazevic staged with visiting young Croatian actors from Croatian National Theatre in Melbourne.

    * Painting – involved bringing an impressive collection of watercolours from Slavonski Brod in Croatia; to exhibiting works by Croatian artists living in Canada, Sydney and from our community in Western Australia.

    * Photography – by a young Australian artist who recently visited Croatia, a journey of rediscovery of own roots.

    * Music – with solo piano performance by a visiting Croatian artist and as part of a larger symphony orchestra conducted by Consul General of Republic of Croatia.

    * Dance – was well represented by local folkloric dance groups “Zagreb” and “Lado”.
This year we went one step further by bringing Folkloric Ensemble “Vencec” from Zagreb to tour Australia. This was huge success thanks to help provided by other Croatian Communities in Australia.
